[edit] About “Just Another Day” (JAD) comics

[edit] Introduction to JAD

Originally, JAD started in March of 2002 and was drawn by Mark Victor Farner on MS Paint (Quite crudely I might add…). The characters and settings were taken primarily from a website forum that he would frequent – Blizzforums.com (BF), in which fan-boys of the company Blizzard Entertainment would discuss the computer games which this mystical company would bestow upon them such as Warcraft, Starcraft and Unreal Tournament. In November of the same year, I was exposed to JAD by way of a Halloween guide done by Mark. I was blown away by the hilarity of his style and soon asked if I could be a part of his series. Soon after, I made a composite character named Link (named for the “Zelda” character of the same name) and wrote a comic that introduced him into the JAD universe. Strange enough, I became a member of the website and went to Mark’s house to post the comic under my account name (as Mark was temporarily banned) and was banned myself. People said that Mark and I were one in the same (because of an IP address lookup that was performed on my account) and I was subsequently banned for an indefinite period of time. Over the upcoming months I worked with Mark and, if nothing else, wrote comics that made us laugh. The situations were, of course, non-universal and pertained mostly to the happenings at BF and were mainly for the enjoyment of the frequent forumers but everyone got a laugh out of them because they were in them. We would include characters that were based on forumers and it was because of this that people would read them.

To understand the series from this point on, you need a little background information. In early 2003, Mark and I had a falling out of sorts and we discontinued the series for an indefinite period of time in order to pay more attention to our schoolwork. It was around this time that Mark was masquerading on the website as a female and gave himself the name “Janie Farrell”. I exposed his charade and he became infuriated with me for telling people his real name and he even wrote a comic exposing something that I had told him in confidence. Later we would joke about it all, but at the time it was a major blow to my self-esteem and I began a comic series of my own known as “ZeldaRulz Comix” (ZRC). I humbly asked permission of Mark to use some of his characters in my series and he gave me the advice to use some rip off characters based on JAD characters. The end result was, as Mr. Burns would say it, “HIGH-LARIOUS! Everyone at BF immensely enjoyed the new series almost as equally as Mark’s own series but I was unhappy that I was not working with my best friend. After three or four comics solo, I went to Mark to see if he liked them and we reworked a few scenes but still posted them as ZRC, eventually working these few comics into a series that would later become one of our favorites. We were working together again and it was at this time that Mark took one of my ideas and ran with it. For months, I had been begging to do a parody of “The Matrix”, one of my all time favorite movies and we finally did it. The result wasn’t as great as I thought it would be but the crowds did eat it up like “Meat Lover’s” pizza at a Weight Watchers convention.

[edit] JTHM Era

From then on we did a send-up of a comic entitled “Johnny the Homicidal Maniac” in which Carnage is transformed into a raging, killing machine induced by a forumer named Sambo and his obsession with kitty cats. The result was great and was soon used for a way to bring Link back into the comics – only to cause more mayhem. Around this time period, Mark was tooling with the idea of taking JAD off of BF and joked about deleting his entire file on the website. After a few minutes of joking, I grabbed his mouse and, without intention to press the delete button, pressed the delete button. The JAD file was expunged from BF and we actually started anew from that point forward.

[edit] LinkTGF's Ban At BF

From here on out it is a bit fuzzy for me to remember but if I recall correctly, at the time, I was banned for 6 months for unnecessary flaming and spamming over the summer. I suppose this was a cry for attention at the time but I felt that if people were going to ignore me and not credit me for my work on JAD, then I was going to go out with a bang instead of a fizzle. For the 6 months that I was banned, I helped Mark with comic ideas and was unaware that Mark moved the JAD series from BF to a new site called “SouthPole.com” (SP). After that, the series moved to its current location, “Warboards.org” (WB). In a twist of fate, I learned of the new location and when I joined, I was revered as somewhat of a comic god by many of the original members of BF and new members that I never heard of. It was something that I had been searching for for quite some time and finally found it. It’s funny – when you look for something high and low, you seldom find it. When you sit back and wait patiently, whatever it was that you wanted will often come to you, many times it will be greater than what you originally sought out.

[edit] The End And The Final Hiatus

Now, Mark and I have taken a bit of a hiatus (the 4th for me and the 23rd for him) but a new series of comics are in the thought process and altogether we have about 3-4 complete ideas. These are possibly some of the best and funniest comics that we have ever done and we hope to have them done in time to go along with this synopsis. I hope that this gives you a bit of insight into my understanding of JAD and I know there are things that I have left out but this is the core essential of the JAD universe. I realize that for nearly 2 years I have spent nearly every waking moment thinking about this but you can’t blame me. JAD is Mark’s baby, but it is my godchild and there is nothing that I would trade for my ability to contribute to it… except for some Mag wheels. Man, that would be sweet…

[edit] JAD comics character synopsis

[edit] Carnage

The original JAD character. Based on the humor of Mark Farner, Carnage is a warped interpretation of Carnage from Spiderman, Mark Farner’s favorite comic book character. Carnage started out as little more than what many refer to as a “homicidal symbiote” but evolved into a more civil character throughout the comic series duration. His former dark side is revisited in a send up of “Johnny the Homicidal Maniac” but he does return to his normal self for most of the series.

[edit] Link

Basically second in command, Link is also “King of the Newbies”. Based upon Adrian Ramirez in a comical sense, Link embodied innocence and ignorance for a long time but, like many great characters, he is made up of more than just back and white and displays many shades of gray in many instances, mostly in the beginning of the series where he shows an evil side after attempting to kill Carnage.

[edit] Garth One Eye

One of the other original characters. His part time occupation includes being a one-eyed tricycle pimp and a full time wimp. He claims to be God’s gift to women and at times also claims that he lost his eye in a freak letter opener accident. Anytime I cannot think of any other character to insert into a scene, Garth always is put in and will often spark some kind of WWGS moment – What Would Garth Say?

[edit] Garth No-Eye

One of the rip off characters from the ZeldaRulz Comix. Also, No-Eye is the only spin off character from that series to make it to JAD. No-Eye is the champion of the handi-capable but he is often taken advantage of in the same manner as Asok in the Dilbert comics. He exhibits Christ-like faith by following Link by his faith and not by his lack of sight, which is a very BAD idea.

[edit] Shankz / Scauthra

Another character derived from a BF forumer. The real life Shankz (now known as Scauthra) is a goth and worships Mizer Malice, hence the ‘M’ for an eye. A very ignorant character, Shankz will often add funky dialogue to a scene and change it up just a bit. Note: I would hardly describe Scauthra as "goth" irl. Maybe try...: House bound, overweight, socially anxious and you did get it right, ignorant. Sometimes delusional, completely self deceptive and an okay writer. Oh, and he is also a closet gay. Just thought you should know.

[edit] Cronoss

Administrator at BF and in the comics serves as a corrupt keeper of the law.

[edit] Captain Hair

On BF, he worships Colin Mochrie of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” hence his name “Captain Hair”.

[edit] Demon Child

Moderator at BF and a friend of mine. DC is a gun nut much like her soon to be revealed lover, Traken.

[edit] Traken

An alien gun nut and the supposed father of Carnage. Not much is known about him except that he seduces women by inviting them to NRA meetings. I know, classy…

[edit] Maul

Part time flamer and a full time idiot. Maul has been killed in this series more than his share of times and has been portrayed as a fag, the symbolic pig’s head as in the book Lord of the Flies, a professional flamer that humps a mailbox and as himself on occasion.

[edit] Crion

Administrator at BF and in the comics acts as a psychotic keeper of the law.

[edit] Sphere

[edit] Raptor

A real life Muslim extremist and another flamer. His attacks on American forumers have earned him a place in the comics as the “go to” guy for terrorism.

[edit] P3ngu!n (Penguin)

A creator of a rival comic strip that was of higher visual quality but only lasted about 3 or 4 strips.

[edit] Tim-and-Carl

Moderator at BF that claimed to have multiple personalities. This was worked into JAD by giving his character a dark half and a light half, literally.

[edit] Redcloak

Former moderator at BF.

[edit] Redsoldier

Forumer at BF that is portrayed in the comics as a soldier that “just got back from Iraq”.

[edit] Shinitenshi (Tenshi)

Another moderator at BF with a penchant for banning people and has grown a reputation for getting rid of them with his (patent pending) “Ban Cannon”.

[edit] AmericanPsych0 / Shinigami

A great character that was inspired by many late night conversations with Mark, Shinigami is the epitome of a manga fanboy. In fact, he carries a Naru plushie everywhere in the comics (Naru is a character from the anime “Love Hina”) and he has since become a staple in many of the new plots.

[edit] Kenji

A formerly perpetually high former, Kenji gave his life to God in real life and is portrayed in the comics as a bit of a stoner. Funny as it is, it keeps him from doing it anymore in real life.

[edit] Seigetank

Continually drunk moderator that, in the comics, goes on benders and killing sprees, usually all in the same night.

[edit] ShawnManX

[edit] Duddits

One of my favorite forumers, Duddits also created a rival comic strip that featured his obsession with gerbils. This didn’t last long but his determination showed us that he had a willing to commit to actually sticking with making comics. When Mark went on his current hiatus, he left Duddits in charge of the JAD file – a task he doesn’t even see ME fit to handle… lucky punk…

[edit] LinkTGF's Thoughts On JAD

I don’t know what to really say now except to thank Mark for his willingness to allow me to work on his baby. If this were my creation, then I would have said “BACK OFF!” but Mark opened it up and let me tinker with what he was working with. I know that many of the original ones that I worked on weren’t the greatest but in time when we look back now, we can say, “Wow. Can you believe that it has come this far from what it used to be?” Mark, thank you again for your continued friendship and continuing support of me butchering your comics… Just kidding, but seriously, thank you for everything. --LinkTGF 01:08, 18 April 2006 (CDT)

[edit] Trivia

  • Carnage did all the comics in MS Paint until the end when he switched to either Paint Shop Pro or GIMP.
  • During the peak of JAD, Carnage and Link worked on a comic almost every day of the week after school.
  • LinkTGF sketched almost every comic that he worked on out in full and has a complete archive of all these sketches in what he and Carnage called the Pile O' Crap.
  • The original JAD thread was deleted by LinkTGF on a dare from Carnage and was later spoofed in the comics that followed the thread deletion.

[edit] The Feel Good Story Of The Year

"Wow... what a history. Good job on prevailing over obsticles and still creating JAD, not for the people who want it, but for the fun of it. Then you guys are kind enough to share it with use. Very good, keep on making them, never let the fun stop."

~ Whiteknight on JAD

"JAD has a powerful history which is probably why it is craved so much. While I wasnt around for the mainstream presentation, I did go back and read most of the JAD that I could find. I was even included in a small uprising of Carnage's return (again) by 'Guardian' @ BF. Fun stuff, I'm a little colorful ball of colored puffs that apparently likes to steal Traken's beer ^^.

I will await more JAD with much anticipation."

~ pixels on JAD

"That was awesome. They should teach that in schools, it deserves it's own subject."

~ wraizyr on JAD

"Wow, his name is Mark. Very interesting read. Im in JAD now too"

~ Mordecai2k on JAD
